A proper interior valet can make your car feel cleaner, fresher and much nicer to drive. Seats, carpets, mats, plastics, door shuts and storage areas all get the attention they need, helping to remove everyday dirt, dust, marks and odours.

But what about the time between valets?

Most cars are used daily. They carry work bags, shopping, children, pets, muddy shoes, drinks, snacks and everything else life throws at them. Over time, even a well-kept car can start to feel tired inside.

The good news is that a few simple habits can help keep your interior looking and smelling better for longer.

Remove Rubbish Regularly

It sounds obvious, but it makes a big difference.

Receipts, wrappers, bottles, coffee cups and old parking tickets quickly make a car feel messy. Try to clear obvious rubbish every few days rather than letting it build up.

A small bag in the door pocket or boot can help, especially if you use your car for work, school runs or longer journeys.

Shake Out Your Mats

Car mats take most of the abuse from dirty shoes, grit, mud and damp.

Giving them a quick shake every now and again helps stop loose dirt from being ground into the carpet underneath. If the mats are rubber, a quick wipe or rinse can help keep them presentable between proper cleans.

This is especially useful during wet weather when mud and road grime are being carried into the car more often.

Avoid Eating in the Car Where Possible

Food crumbs have a habit of finding their way into seat gaps, rails, carpets and awkward corners.

They can also lead to stale smells, sticky marks and extra mess around cup holders and centre consoles. If eating in the car cannot be avoided, a quick clean-up afterwards makes a big difference.

A few minutes at the time is much easier than dealing with weeks of crumbs later.

Wipe Spills Straight Away

Drinks, sauces, sweets and wet clothing can all leave marks if they are left too long.

A clean microfibre cloth kept in the glovebox or boot is a simple but useful habit. If something spills, blot it gently rather than rubbing it hard into the fabric.

For anything more serious, especially milk, coffee or sticky drinks, it is usually best to get it properly cleaned sooner rather than later.

Keep a Microfibre Cloth Handy

Dust builds up quickly on dashboards, screens, vents and glossy trims.

A soft microfibre cloth lets you give visible areas a quick wipe without using harsh products. This helps keep the cabin looking cared for and stops dust from becoming more noticeable.

Avoid using household sprays inside the car, especially on screens, steering wheels and controls. Some products can leave greasy residue or affect delicate surfaces.

Use the Boot Properly

Loose items rolling around the cabin can make the car feel untidy and can mark plastics or carpets.

Keeping tools, bags, sports kit, pet items and shopping in the boot helps keep the main cabin cleaner. A boot organiser or storage box can be useful if you regularly carry the same items.

It is a simple habit, but it makes the car feel more ordered.

Air the Car Out

Cars can hold damp smells, especially during colder or wetter months.

When safe and practical, airing the car for a few minutes can help. Check for damp mats, wet coats, leaky bottles and anything left under seats that could be causing odours.

Bad smells are often easier to deal with early, before they settle into carpets and fabric.

Do Not Let Pet Hair Build Up

Pet hair is one of the most stubborn things to remove from a car interior.

If you regularly carry dogs or other pets, using a seat cover, boot liner or blanket can help reduce the amount of hair that gets into the seats and carpets. Brushing loose hair out regularly also helps stop it becoming embedded.

Once pet hair is worked into fabric, it can take time, patience and the right tools to remove properly.

Book Regular Interior Valets

Small habits help, but they do not replace a proper clean.

Over time, dirt, dust, body oils, stains and odours build up in areas that are easy to miss. A professional interior valet gives the cabin a more thorough clean and helps bring back that fresh, cared-for feeling.

At Wilko Car Care, we take the time to clean your interior properly, not just give it a quick wipe over.
